He received his MBBS degree from the National University of Singapore in 1984. He then went on to further studies in Sports Medicine, obtaining a Masters in Sports Science (Sports Medicine) from the United States Sports Academy in 1988 where he graduated as its top student.
He worked in the rehabilitation medicine department of Singapore General Hospital before joining the Singapore Sports Council’s (SSC) Sports Medicine and Research Centre in 1991, where his patients ranged from student and recreational athletes, to the country’s top sportsmen and women. He was chief medical officer for Team Singapore for the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, and team physician to numerous regional and Commonwealth Games.
During the mid-nineties, he pioneered the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound as an in-clinic tool for evaluation and imaging-guided treatment of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. He is acknowledged as Singapore’s pioneer in ultrasound-guided Extracorporeal Shock-Wave Therapy (ESWT) for sports injuries. Having used the method since 1998, he has conducted research and numerous lectures and hands-on workshops on musculoskeletal ultrasound and ESWT both locally and internationally.
Since leaving for private practice in 2005, he has become the first sports physician in Singapore to use Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for the treatment of sports injuries. His work in this area resulted in an invitation to speak at the prestigious Biobridge Conference in Geneva in 2009, where he presented his findings on PRP treatments for early degenerative conditions of the knee. He has since been invited to speak on PRP in Korea, Romania, China (2010) and in the USA (2011, 2012).
In addition to his private sports medicine practice, Dr. Goh is co-chairman of the Sports Medicine Subspeciality Training Committee under the Ministry of Health, and an examiner for the Advanced Speciality Training Examination in sports medicine. Dr. Goh holds the appointment of Chairman of the National Anti-Doping Advisory Board for Singapore, and Chairman of the South-East Asian Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (SEARADO). He is also an elected board member of the Institute of National Anti-Doping Organisations, and Deputy Chairman of the institutional review board for MINDEF’s Defence Science Organisation (DSO).
