He spent one year in rotations before serving in the military as a Medical Officer in the SAF Commandos until Mar 1996. He started General Surgical Training and completed Orthopaedic Residency training in May 2000. He went to the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota and trained in Orthopaedic Oncology from 2001-2002. He also obtained microsurgery and hand surgery training in Chang Gung Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan in 2003. Today he is able to perform limb salvage operations for malignant tumours in children and adults and to reconstruct with tumour prosthesis, allograft and autograft reimplantation including microvascular and nerve repairs. He is a leading pioneer in Asia for the Van Nes rotationplasty and in cryosurgery ablation for treatment of limb sarcomas. Such surgeries are the most complex with potential for major complications and require a wide gamut of skills which Dr Cheng possesses. Patients from the Asian region, Middle East and Eastern Russia who present with such devastating diseases whose life and limb are at risk will be very comfortable with Dr Cheng who is prepared to spend hours counselling them. He has also served in war zones with the SAF and brought his surgical skills to treat locals with severe limb conditions.

His current practice located at Farrer Park Medical Centre, provides Consultation, Radiology, Day Surgery and Rehabilitation services all under one roof. The one-stop orthopaedic centre aims to provide seamless healthcare to patients ruling out the need to commute to an external location for radiology, surgery and rehabilitation.
